The Father-Daughter Dance

In honor of Father's Day (this weekend!!) we want to honor the very special moment at the wedding - The Father-Daughter Dance! This dance is a widely celebrated tradition in which the father dances with his daughter at her reception to symbolize the giving away of daddy’s little girl. For this dance, there are some favored songs such as: The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra, Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle, and How Sweet it is to be Loved by You by Marvin Gaye.

However, you should not simply stick to the ordinary and traditional. The Father-Daughter Dance has caught up with modern times in many ways. If your father is not an available for the dance, it can include another important man in your life such as an uncle, brother, grandfather, or even your mother! Also, you do not have to dance to the same traditional songs; pick a song that means something to you or is more up beat in tempo! Check out this video for a fun idea! It is SO CUTE!

Just remember, no matter if you go for the traditional or the contemporary - savor the moment as one that is very special indeed!

When we think diamond ring we think: engagement, marriage, and commitment (ok and Bling!).

Why is that? What is in the symbolism of a ring that can strengthen the bond between two people? When William, Duke of Cambridge, announced that he wasn't going to be wearing a ring what went through your mind? Most of us girls probably questioned his commitment to Kate, except for the fact that their marriage was broadcast all over the world. So therefore the commitment part should definitely not be of question.

A webpage source called Daily Mail states, 'It was something the couple discussed but Prince William isn't one for jewelry - he doesn't even wear a signet ring - and decided he didn't want to. It really is just down to personal preference,' they said.

Prior to the second World War it was unheard of for men to wear wedding rings. Soon it become atoken that the soldiers abroad used to remember their families.

Since then the trend of men wearing wedding rings became increasingly popular.

In the past men wearing a ring wasnt as crucial, but today the modern bride wouldn't dare hear of their husbands not having one.

Why do you think this is? Have women become more and more insecure with their marriages over the years? Could scandals such as Tiger Woods contribute to this?

Regardless, culturally and traditionally adorning rings on the fourth finger seems to be the most important part when it comes to making the first step to committing yourself to spend the rest of your life with another.

I wonder if Duke William has started a whole new trend here? Ladies what say you - is it ok for your guy not to rock the ring? Fellas - your thoughts on wearing it the age-old symbol of fidelity and commitment?

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 19

Vegas Baby! Whatever happens in Vegas...may just pop up online if a bridesmaid just happens to be a blogger! (wink, wink) Let me give you a sweet short summary of the innocent debauchery which took place this past weekend. Two nights at the Palazzo, dinner at the delicious Switch inside Encore, and two nights of dancing until my feet had blisters at Marquee and XS. So that's the summary. What really happened was reminiscent of a girl version of the Hangover minus live animals and an actual wedding.

So while I can't divulge anything further than that due to my bridesmaid confidentiality, plus there's a chance the groom might take a peek at this. What can I tell you?

The bride enjoyed the string of NEW thongs and panties over her bed. In order to get an undergarment, she had to correctly answer questions that her fiance had already previously answered. For all of the leftovers due to her wrong guesses, we compiled a dare list for her to accomplish tasks in order for her to take home the remaining underwear. They were so much fun!

For those looking for a delicious dinner, I highly suggest trying out Switch. I think everyone should eat there at least once while in Vegas. Where else can you dine as the walls and ceiling literally "switch" scenery every 20 minutes? The Filet was to die for, melted in my mouth as nibbles of creamed spinach, truffled mac and cheese and mashed potatoes completed my meal.

Wanna dance the night away? Marquee inside the beautiful Cosmopolitan hotel is your typical Vegas club. A huge venue with a great DJ, crowded yet lively dance floor, with appearances by Genie and Jack in the Box. Did I say the Genie from Aladdin and Jack? Yes I did! And no, I was not on any type of narcotic. That was one aspect of the Hangover that we definitely did NOT indulge in.

XS is one of Vegas' staples. Great music, large glittering chandeliers, outdoor patio/pool, and tables for you to gamble should the drinks not be a sufficient way for you to spend your money. Nevertheless, it's a great club that everyone must go to at least once.

So there you go my friends. Your very own Cliff Notes guide to throwing a bachlorette in Vegas. And if anyone was there this weekend and saw a group of girls running around the hotel blowing loud pink whistles. You have us to thank for that. And yes, we're bringing the whistles to the wedding. The bride will LOVE it! (as for her guests, well, that is left to be determined!)

With the rising temperatures of summer, so comes the upswing of out door parties. Whether it be a block party, BBQ, pool party, or a simple picnic there is one must have activity - Lawn Games! And you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a good, old fashioned game! Lawn games add a fun element to any outdoor gathering, and they come in all sorts of variety to fit the party at hand. For a sophisticated summer garden or tea party, add croquet to the mix for that touch of preppy, high society.

For a more laid back BBQ or picnic, set up a casual game of horseshoes or bocce ball. Lawn games allow for an easy way for your guests to mingle and meet one another, while also adding a bit of fun and whimsy to your party!

All Aboard - Nautical Weddings!

Do you love all things Hamptons & Yacht-Clubs? Than the nautical wedding is right up your galley. From start to finish, the guest should be immersed in a world of water, ocean breezes and sofisticated casual class!

To begin, start with nautical themed invitations; a traditional blue and white with touches of red or the more playful message in a bottle!

For décor, stick with the go-to natural nautical elements and colors, incorporating sailing knots, starfish and shells, and nautical flags. You can also add yellows, oranges, and pinks for a nod to the preppy look.

Flowers should be simple but elegant - whites and blues with another accent color or you can stick with pretty greens, leaves and driftwood for a burst of natural color. Have fun with the cake and play it up to your lively theme.

The Brides Maids can wear a navy dress or an elegant light blue. Or if you choose one of the more vibrant colors, use their dresses as another way to incorporate your color choices - dont fear the stripe! Put the Grooms Men in navy jackets with kaki pants and a white button up – we love the sailing knot boutonniere!

For the venue, host your nautical wedding somewhere that has an ocean breeze drifting through with the smells of the sea. With a nautical wedding you could do a destination such as Balboa Island, Newport or Dana Point Harbor, or any waterfront property. For those who want to fare the seas, a yacht would most definitely be the pièce de résistance!

No doubt about it, Philippa “Pippa” Middleton looked exquisite in her fitted ivory maid-of-honor gown. It’s no wonder brides are searching high and low for a gown just the same for their maid-of-honor. Do you think Pippa stole the show from Duchess Catherine by standing by her side at the altar in all white? Or will this be the start of an all white wedding party trend?

Actually having an all white bridal party is an ancient superstition. In ancient times, the bridesmaids all wore the same color as to confuse evil spirits or even kidnappers whom sought out brides of wealthy families.

So if you want to ward off evil spirits and kidnappers from stealing your bride let her know it’s important you look just as stunning as the bride herself ;)

ENGAGED!! Kim and Mark's Styled Engagement

"How did you find out about Intertwined?" I asked.

"My brother Kevin volunteers at your camp and absolutely loves it. He told us about you." Kim replied.

From there, I knew this was going to be a wedding we had to be involved with coordinating! Kevin is one of Camp's all start volunteers and any family of camp, is family to us. We are so excited to be involved with Kevin and Mark's wedding this July. After seeing them take just a couple ideas from us and turn it into THIS, I know it's going to be nothing short of fun, personal and super creative.

After they were done with their picnic themed shoot (they got engaged over a picnic so it was the perfect setting), they ventured off to the Observatory where Mark had originally planned to propose! He is a planner and all we can say is good thing he planned for a 2nd and 3rd back up.

Mark and Kim - we are so excited to be a part of your big day! From the conversations we have had to the meet and greet at the movie theatre, we know it's going to be a great partnership. We wish you all the best...just a little more than a month to go!!! :-)

REAL WEDDING: Kristin & JP

We walked away from this wedding knowing that the bride and groom were one of the most loved couples amongst their friends. From heartfelt toasts, to tears and much laughter, this wedding had it all...not to mention one of the cutest flower girls we have ever seen!

Kristin and JP were married at El Adobe in San Juan Capistrano, but stopped by the historic Mission San Juan for their first look and some bridal party pics. Marc Weisberg, the photographer behind their wedding, did an amazing job capturing the color, environment and feeling of this wedding. His team was great to work with and their work was just as memorable.

See? She is seriously as cute as can be!

This goes down as one of my favorite wedding photos I have seen in a very long time...As Kristin's god daughter, I'm sure this is a portrait that will live in their house for years and years.

The cupcakes and small cake were provided by SusieCakes. I've heard a lot about them over the years, but tried my first cupcake at this wedding...my life was changed by that chocolate cupcake.

We loved the simplicity of the arrangements. Kristin collected jars, old wine and glass bottles to use for the centerpieces. Reher's Florist did an excellent job in keeping the arrangements simple, but classy. They were the perfect amount of decor for the restaurant which already had a lot to offer.

Kristin and JP wanted their guests to have a fun time and share the laughter with them...what better way than to leave these gaucho glasses at each guest's chair before the ceremony. Yes, guests were literally wearing these throughout the ceremony...it was awesome!

As the dancing started, the ceiling of El Adobe opened up and allowed the guests to dance under the stars. For all those guests who were visiting El Adobe for the first time, it was an amazing site to see.

Kristin and JP - thank you for allowing us to be a part of your very special day. We couldn't have had more fun and loved knowing it was everything you anticipated and more. You are so loved by your family and friends - we were beyond moved by the support, admiration and respect they have for the two of you. We hope you had an amazing honeymoon and are settling into your newlywed lifestyle.

A great way to give back to a world tha has given you this wonderful love, bond, and lifetime of happiness you are about to embark upon with your fiancé, is funding those in need and sharing your love with the world.

The now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge featured a charity registry in lue of wedding gifts, what a wonderful wedding trend, we at Intertwined Events truly hope catches like wildfire! They had five different charities that their guests could choose to support in their honor. The wedding couple chose these charities carefully. Each charity resembles the experiences, passions, and values of their lives so far. They even created a webpage http://www.royalweddingcharityfund.org/ where people from all over could donate to their charity of choice. The couple hoped that by doing this they could make a community impact (not just a media frenzy) from the Royal Wedding.

Be a part of a truly giving trend/tradition on your wedding day! And just know, how great will it feel to donate those two extra toasters and espresso machines to someone in need!

With summer just around the corner, the beach is constantly on my mind. While browsing through one of my favorite swimsuit sites, http://www.everythingbutwater.com/, this mirror embroidered cover up immediately caught my eye.

How gorgeous?! It’s like wearable art! White sometimes gets a bad rap for easy stain-ability and some find it unflattering. I whole-heartedly disagree! I find it conjurs up an air of luxury resort living and offers flattering, tannifying color to those who dare to wear!

When you’re relaxing on the beach, sun on your face, pina colada in hand you should look and feel fabulous - in something just like this!

The Dress! Speculation, sketches, commentary, trending topics, renderings and even betting all surrounded the Royal Wedding Dress! Everyone wanted to know what would the British Fashion Icon turned Duchess be wearing and would she select to design it?

She looked absolutely stunning her classic 1950’s style ball gown with sheer lace sleeves and a traditional princess 9-ft. train.

Strapless may be the number one style, however, brides are now, more than ever, requesting lace sleeves and a lace trim veil to give their wedding a trendy Royal flair - thanks to Kate and her homage to Grace Kelly!

Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen is to thank for the design of this elegant beauty. Sarah Burton was selected as the designer as Kate “wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work.”

Tales of A Bridesmaid: Edition 18

I'm running through the store with one of my best friends giggling as if we were in elementary school again. "How about this one?" she asks. "No, I don't think it's right," I reply. The sales girl comes back with some more choices and my friend and I resume our giggle fest. I'm a couple of years away from 30. Why am I finding so much delight in this?

It's because we're standing in the middle of Victoria's Secret. She has a one piece, sheer, animal type, thong lingerie in her hand, and I'm holding a florescent pink baby doll nightie in mine. The sales girl standing in between us as we debate. "I want to make sure she turns bright red when she opens it in front of her grandma," I tell the sales girl. I was shopping for a bride-to-be and her bridal shower was the following day.

I don't know why but when it comes to bridal showers, I toss aside registry cards and make my way towards the nearest Victoria's Secret or Nordstrom lingerie department. "I want whips, chains, hand cuffs," were my words of the day as I perused through lace and sheer materials that afternoon. I realized I probably shouldn't have said it out loud because for a brief moment - I got embarrassed. What if people thought I wanted those things? "For the bride-to-be at her bridal shower of course," I would then say (just a bit louder).

It's a tad bit evil but if the bride is going to sit there for an hour or more opening presents, something in one of those gift bags and boxes wrapped in silver and white has to have something funny. I skipped over the bridal white section and made straight for frilly lace, ribbons, and dark colors. As much as I would have loved to give my friend a toaster oven, sitting there giggling as she opened up my present in front of her family and friends was worth more than a new apron or any hint of domesticity a shower can bring.

What did I end up picking out? A Moulin Rouge inspired piece. Really pretty actually but screams vixen with...drumroll please...edible body paint. I was giggling like a 14-year-old girl over Justin Bieber when she got to mine. It was definitely funnier than the virginal white baby doll with baby blue bows that someone else had selected for her.

So bridesmaids, friends of the bride...switch it up a little when it comes to bridal showers and know its ok, even desired, to throw in a dash of spice. But please, no spice racks.

Wedding Wednesday: Royal Trends

At 1 a.m. on April 29, 24 million Americans tuned into watch Kate Middleton and Prince William become Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This was such an exciting day and brides awaiting their big day were watching the world over to see the fashion and traditions that would soon become bridal trends and traditions for years to come. One such trend that has branched out beyond London and will be seen far past the pews of weddings are Fascinators.

The Royal Wedding incorporated unique and fun attire for their guests by requesting all in attendance wear a head piece, fascinator, or some type of hat.

What a fashion statement!

Another very traditional accessory that is increasingly becoming a popular request in bridal boutiques is blushers. Incorporating a veil into your bridal attire is an extremely important part of making you feel like a Bride - there is something so romantic and traditional about a long formal veil!

Will you or your bridal party be including a head piece or perhaps another nod to the Royal Wedding? Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 17

Bridal showers. They all follow the same format. Each just vary in size and budget. This post will be about games since it tends to be the main feature of every shower.

I once had a bride who specifically said no games. That was easy for us. So what did we do? Belly dancing instead, I mean, of course, right, wouldn't you?!.

However, this past weekend I attended the standard shower. It featured a light lunch, cake, bubbly drinks, games, and presents. The first game featured placing nametags on the backs of every guest upon arrival. It served as an icebreaker and allowed guests to ask questions in order to obtain clues of the famous woman stickered on their back.

Next was the ring game. It's about as common as wrapping girls up in toilet paper to create wedding gowns. Each guest was given five rings. They were unable to say the bride or groom's name the entire day. The offender's ring would be taken away if they were caught.

Present bingo! Each guest filled out a bingo sheet with potential gifts the bride would open. First to complete a row wins. Next up, guests wrote out items in the bride's purse. We proceeded to empty out its contents to see who got it right. The key is to not forewarn the bride or she might clean out her bag.

Bridal shower games vary depending on the bride's preference. There's trivia, toilet paper bride, drawing with a plate on your head, and much more. Sometimes it's fun to use these but it's great to mix it up and think outside the box too. Belly dancing anyone? What are some of the best bridal shower games you have played or planned?

When Lucia from Utterly Engaged approached us about contributing to the newest edition of Utterly Engaged we couldn't say no. Utterly Engaged is an e-zine unlike any other in the wedding industry and it consistently inspires us with each new issue; the most recent issue did not let us down!

Taking the theme of issue 15, Sweet and Spicy, we wanted to take the readers on an experience with the bride and groom throughout their entire day from getting ready, to enjoying the reception to the honeymoon suite.

We partnered with one of our favorite photographers, Ashley from APictureLife Photography, and she blew us out of the water once again. Ashley captured every single detail beautifully and we couldn't have been happier with how all the images turned out.

Check out this cake from Cupcakes Couture. They pulled through for us last minute and we were so happy with everything they provided from this cake, to the cupcakes and mini cake seen below!!

The rentals came from the fabulous Allison and Jeni of FOUND Rentals. They consistently pull through with the most AMAZING pieces.

Now, lets talk about these florals...are they not the most romantic, feminine things you have ever seen. I loved everything about them from the lace accents, the pearls to the textured milkglass vases. HUGE thanks to Jaclyne from Heavenly Blooms.

I fell in love with our models for the shoot - they were literally down for anything and made us all laugh throughout the day...not to mention they are absolutely stunning.

Jordan from Mintwich Design created a beautiful invitation suite and labels for the bride and groom. I couldn't have been more thrilled with the end product!

Our couples looked extra glamorous thanks to the wonderfully talented Kacee Geoffroy. Anytime we get the opportunity to work with Kacee we jump at it - she is SOOO fun and an absolute joy to work with!

I'm going to say Reece took credit for her pink wedding dress after seeing this beauty from Ouma. Paired with the gorgeous shoes from Nina Shoes, this bride was a show stopper!

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 16

Gulp down a Slimfast every morning for the next several months. Maybe I should replace two meals a day with Special K cereal. Or I can eat lean meats and cut out white carbs until the wedding. One of my biggest regrets as a Bridesmaid is that I never work out for that special day. I figure who cares if my arms are a tad bit wobbly or that my abs aren't bikini ready. It's your special day, not mine! None of the guests are there to see me and I blend into the crowd once the DJ starts spinning anyway. That is until months later, I visit the happy couple in their new home and see wedding photos of the fat bridesmaid. That's me! I begin to wonder why I didn't lift some more weights, why didn't I cut out that carbo-licious meal?

It's like you never win unless you're one of the few lucky people who get to live at the gym every day but who really has the time for that? By the time I leave the office or school and get home, the last thing I want to do is schlep myself back out to head to the gym. Call it lack of motivation or just another excuse for me not to work out but it's true. I look forward to traffic free evenings when I get to head home, relax with the pup before taking her out for a walk, and then preparing dinner or going out to find some for the night. Plus don't they say it's bad to work out before bed, anyway?

Sure I lift a couple of 5lb weights every now and then. Make mental notes to buy whole wheat versus starchy carbs and roll out the yoga mat at home. However, it still doesn't add up to the same benefits of sweating it out on the stair master and elliptical for an hour. With a poolside bachlorette coming up in my near future, I should care more. I should want to try the crazy cookie diet or drink a week's worth of detox to rid myself of water weight.

Let's be honest, we all know I'm not going to do any of that. Until my gym is finished with its upgrade in June, I'm not going to hunt down another gym either. I'm not going to make evening work outs routine, but I will make a conscious effort to eat less french fries and chips as the wedding date approaches. I guess I could also roll out the yoga mat more. Great for mind and body? Who wouldn't want that kind of workout?! It's all about moderation. Eating healthy and exercising when possible. No point in stressing out over it. I have plenty of other things on my mind that doesn't involve my semi-jiggly arms.

I know, I know. I most likely exaggerated a bit in this post but I really see no point in girls having to kill themselves over weight loss and appearances. I'm the average girl. Average height, average weight for my age. I don't stand out in crowds and that's what I like about me. I think I'm doing well for now. No point in stressing right? However, I think I'll have some salmon for dinner sans baked potato with extra sour cream.

ENGAGED! Meet Monique (Mo) & Josh!

She's bohemian chic and he is one fancy dude; together, they are perfect for one another. Mo and Josh met in medical school and share a passion for helping others. They are currently in their residency and I know are going to do big things in their careers.

I am so excited for their October wedding at Richard Nixon Library. We are putting together an amazing vendor team that will combine their cultures, personalities and love for one another.

Together with Brittany Rene Photography, we styled an engagement session that captured their personalities perfectly. Nestled within the trees of Oak Canyon Nature Center, they read books, relaxed and posed beautifully for their engagement photos...I'm in awe of this location and their amazing pictures.

Thank you for rolling up your sleeves, ready to help with whatever we need for Camp! Thank you for instilling in me pride - for who I am, where I came from, and where I am trying to go!

And to all the mothers who have helped us all to become the women (and men!) we are today, thank you for your selflessness and unconditional love.

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 15

I am sure I have told you that I LOVE anything princess related but couldn't help but think what would have been different if Disney movies had incorporated Bridesmaids (aka the Princess' human friends).

Cinderella would never have been locked up in the tower as her stepsisters tried on her glass slipper. Because with one SOS text, the bridesmaids would have been there to kick some major stepmom butt. As for Jasmine, she would have never been held captive as a future bride for Jafar because girls can spot a snake a mile away. Especially the ones that cast evil spells on people. As for Aladdin, we would have to have a talk about not telling lies and being true to you. As the genie even said, Be Yourself! Ariel could have saved time if she would have let her Mer-bridesmaids set her up with Eric instead of selling her voice to Ursula. Sleeping Beauty probably wouldn't have pricked her finger if she would have ordered her dress or any other type of clothing from an outside (of the castle) vendor. After all, the bridesmaids did.

Good job Belle, you saw in the Beast what none of the rest of us would have seen. You stuck it out and ended up with a Prince. Bravo!

What I'm basically saying is that despite how happily each of these stories ended. Things could have been so much different if Bridesmaids were added to the story lines. So brides, thank your bridesmaids every once in a while. They may not be battling evil villains but they may just get really close to doing so as your wedding approaches. All so that you can have a flawless day and live happily ever after.

ENGAGED: Meet Michelle and Pat

Meeting Michelle for the first time was like meeting a long lost friend. When she walked in wearing an outfit that looked like it had to find a home in my closet very soon, I knew I couldn't wait to dive into all the details of her wedding! We've been working together for a few months now and we are all having too much fun!

Michelle and Pat are getting married at La Purisima in Orange and then will go the short distance to Orange Hill Restaurant to dance and party the night away this November. They have seriously considered every detail of their wedding; I know their guests are going to walk away and be grateful they were there to celebrate with them!!

We have had the pleasure of working with Joel Austell Photography once before and couldn't be more excited to work with him again on Michelle and Pat's wedding. Love For The Royal Wedding

Although I wouldn't let myself set my alarm for 3AM this morning, I did leave my tv on all night, set to TLC, in hopes I might wake up in the middle of the night and see the wedding...and that's exactly what happened. :-) As I fell in and out of sleep during the early hours of the day, I saw a beautiful bride, a proud groom and a royal wedding I will never forget watching.

I could write a re-cap to share, but after reading Jen from Green Wedding Shoes re-cap today, I knew she had everything I would have wanted to include...check out her blog to see the highlights and ideas on how you can incorporate them into your wedding!

A Perfect Fit!

You are nearly one month from your big day and you have an appointment to pick up your wedding gown. Your first fitting. You haven’t seen it in months and now you have to hope it looks just as perfect as you imagined it would without the big ugly orange construction clamps that the stylist used (what seems like) forever ago. Your gown is the center piece, all eyes on you as the doors open and you walk down the aisle, or step on to the floor for the first dance - it must be perfect!

Most of the time, you will arrive at your appointment heart pounding, not sure whether to be excited or anxious. The stylist will bring out a large white bag that holds the most fabulous gown you have ever seen. You will walk into the dressing room allowing the stylist to help you into your dress. Your mom and dad are waiting outside the room to see their daughter wearing the most important (and possibly expensive) garment you will ever wear. As the stylist pulls the gown up over your hips you hold your breath as the sound of the zipper (in most cases) goes all the way up! Now you can finally relax! You walk out giving your family chills as they take tons of pictures of your first fitting. You are smiling, you finally feel like everything is coming together.

Well life doesn’t always work this perfectly, at least not on the first try. But with a few tips, the ladies of Intertwined Events are here to ensure you get there, beautifully adorned in the perfect dress, before the wedding bells chime!

Sometimes, you may not be the same size as you were at the time of purchase. Brides may unexpectedly gain or lose weight (hey, life happens!). If this happens to you, contact the store manager where you bought your gown immediately so they can get a hold of the designer and see if they can make some last minute changes so everything goes smoothly at your fitting.

In some very rare cases, a bride will find another gown. You might have felt pressured to buy the first one because everyone just kept asking if you had your dress or fell victim to making those around you happy with your selection instead of buying for you! Garden weddings and parties are a common spring occurrence. Of course, the ladies of Intertwined, with just a few simple tips will have you hopping from garden to garden elegantly and seemingly, effortlessly.

Garden weddings are beautiful but but by their nature (literally, nature) they are outdoors which means you must arrive prepared for walking in the grass, sitting in the sun, encountering the occasional spring shower, and of course looking the part of dressed up for the event but not dressed out for a night on the town.

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 14

Sit back and enjoy the moment (any moment!) because you won't have any particular moment forever. Sounds simple enough right? Sadly, it's something many of us cannot do. We are on the go 24/7 in a fast paced world where texts are answered in a matter of seconds and emails within a matter of minutes. Patience has gone out the window and the days of just sitting back and relaxing are foreign. The simplicity of life's every day joys are overwhelmed with instant communication, over sharing online, and schedules so busy you have to set reminders for your reminders.

I am sharing this because it sums up my life. Many parents have children who remind them of the simpler things in life. That it's important to take the time to enjoy the moment. Well for one thing, I have no children so that idea is out and my dog can only do so much before she crawls under a blanket for her 50th nap of the day. So what do I do now? I would like to refer to my Tales of a Bridesmaid, Edition 10 post. Remember this girl? "For the girl who is waiting, she has her guy. She has her wedding all planned out. She is simply waiting for the question to come. And my dear friend, it will be when you least expect it. So stop trying to ruin the surprise for yourself."

Well she waited and when she least expected it, he popped the question. Three friends have now told me via text (e.g. they sent me a picture of their ring) that they are engaged. This is usually followed by a scream from me. Strangers staring at me as to why I'm screaming as I proceed to call the new bride to be.

Now back to the sit back and relax part of the blog. I immediately called my friend to get all of the details about this beautiful sparkler which will now adorn her finger for the rest of her life. It was a typical casual Sunday. Watching TV, playing with their dog, relaxing and then BAM! He whips out a ring in a box that is so big, I'm surprised it fit in the box. Lesson ladies, good things come to those who wait. Anyways, she says yes. She texts her friends. I call and she tells me the story. I ask when the wedding date will be. One year? Several months? Over one year? In two years? Will the wedding be on the East Coast? West Coast? Should you have your bachlorette in Vegas? Or perhaps sunny Palm Springs? How about that resort we all loved last summer? Or the Palazzo in Vegas?

She stops me and says, "Oh my gosh, S. I've only been engaged for half an hour. I don't know yet." It hit me, I had failed to realize that despite how amazing this moment was for her. She was still getting used to the idea that her boyfriend was now her fiance. Shame on me. So I simply told her to go enjoy her newly engaged moment and took a mental note to keep my mouth shut. I didn't let her enjoy the moment because I was so caught up in the details of planning. With another congratulations, I hung up the phone and smiled as another one of my friends will be walking down the aisle in the future. Near future perhaps?

So brides and bridesmaids, enjoy the simple joyous moments in your life. Don't get too weighed down with the logistics. It's okay to take a breather. Life doesn't always have to go 90 mph. Easier said than done right?

Memorable Monday: Hearing Stories Through My Grandma's Eyes

My College Graduation Party - 2007

Growing up you always look at your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family members differently. They aren't people; they are adults. Then, one day it finally clicks and you realize they were just like you at some point. They are human, they make mistakes, they have stories, their personalities are hilarious and they just aren't your parents or family members that are there to take care of you and tell you what to do. From this point forward, you realize you are lucky to have them in your life and you try to find out everything you can about them.

I still remember taking my grandma off this pedestal I had her on and hearing her say "bad words" and tell stories about her childhood and growing up for the first time. It was such an experience to relate to her; I grew up a lot that day.

Yesterday, Easter Sunday, I drove down to San Diego to pick up my Nana and bring her to my dad's house in Orange County. We did a lot of driving together yesterday. More importantly, we did a lot of talking. My Nana has always had a fascination with the Royal family; she absolutely LOVED Princess Diana and I still remember my mom telling me that Nana was crying hysterically when she passed away. With all the talk of the upcoming Royal Wedding, we spent a whole hour discussing what it was going to be like, which then led to a discussion of my Nana's floral business.

For 15 years my Nana helped support her family by running a floral business out of her garage. She helped make people's dreams become so real with her flowers. My mom and aunt's weddings were all done by my Nana and from the photos I have seen, she knew what she was doing!

I got the opportunity to talk to my Nana about all the things that go through my head these days: pricing, marketing, how to gain a new client, etc. It was so fascinating hearing she went through the same struggles and triumphs years and years ago with her business. I also felt lucky to know I had inherited some of her genes and fell in love with the wedding industry at a young age; moving on, I will now always thank her for starting within me this passion for weddings.

I will never forget yesterday's conversations with her. At 87 years old, who knows how much time I have left with my Nana. What I do know is I will value every minute I spend with her and continue to ask her all the questions about what her life was like in the past; she is a wealth of information and I feel blessed to be her granddaughter.

Finding "The One"....The Dress That Is

I’ve come to realize the search for finding the perfect white dress for your big day is a lot like choosing someone to marry. There are many that are beautiful and most of them even look good on, but there is only one that will give you that just perfect feeling from the moment you step into and will have you laying awake at night dreaming about it until you are in its presence again!

Here are 5 tips to finding “the one":

Peruse within your budget: Please don’t try on anything you know you can’t afford only to be heart broken when it makes you look like a million dollars (hint: if you can’t afford it, it mine as well cost that much too!) You are only setting yourself up to be terribly disappointed and will compare every other dress to this one unattainable one. There are stunning, downright gorgeous dresses in every price range so be upfront with you salesperson when you go shopping that you only want to see dresses in your price range and they are sure to bring you something that you not only love, but can afford.
Be open minded, about 90% of brides end up selecting a dress that has a completely different silhouette from what they thought they wanted. Decide whether you want lots of glitz and glam or traditional lace but don’t be afraid to go beyond the pictures you will inevitably be holding in your hand when you walk into the store. Decide what makes you feel like a bride after all, you only get to be a bride once! Note - About 85% of your photographs are going to be from the waist up, so make sure you love the top of your dress as much as you love the back and train.
Know thy body type: Every dress is going to look different on every bride. It’s about finding what works with your body type you have endless options from ball gown, mermaid, princess cut, fitted, empire…the list goes on. You are guaranteed to find something that you not only look great in but FEEL great in as well. There’s that word again, it’s all about the way it makes you feel. Don’t be afraid to try something you have never considered before.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT go to more than 3 bridal stores tops! : Especially don’t try on too many in one day. If you do this you will end up finding a favorite in every store guaranteed. You will get overwhelmed and exhausted. Everything will blurr together, every dress will begin to look the same, and you will have tried on so many that you will focus on every possible details imaginable. You will forget about the big picture and lose touch with which one makes you feel best. When you do find “the one” yet insist on seeing what else is out there, you could miss out. Don’t over shop!
Its about you! When you find “the one” you will say “I look (and feel) beautiful” not “this dress is so beautiful.” Don’t bring too many opinionated friends or family. Bring only family and friends who are truly and genuinely excited in your love and happiness. Only bring the ones that are going to make this a less stressful and more exciting experience because that is all it should be.

If you follow this advice it will only get you closer to finding the dress of your dreams.

Bottom line, If you feel amazing in the dress then you are going to look amazing in the dress because you always look how you feel. You will knows it’s “the one” when nothing else compares!

Fab Friday Find: OUR HERO!

Sometimes life throws a curve ball for reasons we do not understand. We would like to ask you, our valued readers, to hear Nathaniel’s story.

One day last June, we at Intertwined had the pleasure of working with the cutest 5-year-old ring bearer in the world. Little Nathaniel marched to the front of the church, looked up at us with his big, brown eyes, and announced that he was head of ring security.

That was one of the family’s happiest days, when Nathaniel debuted as ring security at his aunt Katie’s wedding. Just a few short days later, Nathaniel’s father was reading a book about starfish to him before bed. Nathaniel counted off the page, showing a curious lack of spacial perception. Concerned, his parents visited doctors while their little boy endured test after test. They discovered Nathaniel had brain cancer.

We at Intertwined ask your support of Nathaniel and his family during this time. your prayers, positive thoughts and intentions are all appreciated in more ways than you can imagine. With your help, Nathaniel will get to serve as ring security for many more years to come.

Tales of a Groomsmen...from a Bridesmaid!

Forget 27 dresses! How about 27 tuxes? Okay, I lied. He's only been in five weddings. Regardless, for a guy - that is a lot of weddings! I recently interviewed the "ultimate groomsman". Here's what he had to say about weddings.

What was your favorite part of being a groomsman and what is your least fave?

My favorite part is being a part of a close friend's unbelievable day... arguably their most important, aside from having kids. The whole ordeal, from the bachelor party (heeeyyoo), to the actual ceremony. You feel honored, like you get to enjoy all the stuff that goes on, but you're VIP! hahaha... it's a great feeling.

My least was having to shave my beard for one of the weddings! Luckily I've had only good experiences, but I'll never forget how matter-of-fact the bride was when she told me I was shaving for her day. She's the boss.

Is it hard for your wedding date because you're so busy when a part of someone's big day (taking pics, making toasts)?

Um, I don't know. I'm a super player, so I never consider a girl's feelings.

Side note: He really isn't as much of a player as he thinks he is. I actually know the guy and he's been a great friend to our mutual friends, has a good track record for treating girls right, loving dog owner, and if he were really a tool - I wouldn't have asked him to help me with this. However, I hope he never uses the term "super player" ever again. Who says that?!

What's one of your funniest groomsmen memories?

We took boats in Newport Harbor, hitting up the bait and tackle shop on the way to the reception for a 12 pack. We rolled up with some open boxes for the pics.

Side note: He used to be in a fraternity. No more explanation needed.

Being so exposed to weddings, how often do you as a guy think about your own? If not really, do you plan to be involved or become a groomzilla?

I have always thought about my wedding, actually. I'm in a great relationship right now, and we talk about what we want. It's fun and exciting to share ideas on such a gigantic event. I know that I'll be very involved, even if I'm guessing only about 20% of husbands-to-be really get involved. I can't wait.

Side note: Future groomzilla in the making.

Believe it or not, guys don't just sleep in then shower and get ready for the ceremony and reception. They really do think about it. Perhaps not nearly as much as girls do but enough to care.

Sometimes you hear a story of a couple and you know that you have to be involved in making their engagement perfect, no matter what money is involved, the recognition or the benefits. Sam and Seth are one of those couples!

When Brittany from Brittany Rene Photography contacted us and asked if we would be interested in helping to style Seth and Sam's engagement shoot, we couldn't pass up the opportunity.

They are the sweetest couple with two kids that could not be any cuter. In their photos, they wanted everyone to know how happy they were, how much love they had for their children and what a fun couple they are; I think these photos say all that and more!

Memorable Monday: Romantic Getaway #3 NEWPORT BEACH!

Born and raised in the OC, the ladies of Intertwined are very bias when it comes to our hometown! We love the beaches, restaurants, shopping, laid back but always-stylish lifestyle that we call our own. And you better believe we will put our wedding destinations up against any as the very best in the world!

Truly, there is no better place to fall in love (all over again) with the man of your dreams watching a gorgeous sunset, eating yumming fresh food, with your toes in the sand. But don't think the Beaches are all this county has to offer when planning your romantic getaway!

At the end of April, Newport holds its own film festival so for you movie buffs this is a great time to be in town, but for a quieter, more romantic stay, I advise booking from May on. The Island Hotel is a much recommended, gorgeous getaway for couples.

The gorgeous Fairmont Hotel offers a Love-California Style Package, complete with champagne, luxury suite, and late check out so you and your beau can lounge all day. Every Valentines Day (shoot..just missed it), the package includes a pair of soft, downy robes and a balcony. Another one of their offers is a cruise around Newport Harbor aboard the Duffy, which you can crew yourself for the active couple!

Newport is also home to four of the ten most romantic restaurants in Orange Country, according to Examiner.com. These include Il Farro, a rustic, Tuscany style Italian nook, and fresh fare Cafe R&D.

In nearby Laguna, visit the Montage Laguna Beach and enjoy a couples massage and a rose petal bath. It doesn’t get more luxurious than this.

For the activity-bound, you have the Happiest Place on Earth, just 20 minutes away in Anaheim, as well as the home of Angels Baseball and Ducks Hockey for the sports fans! If you are looking for a great concert check out what's scheduled at the Honda Center, Irvine Meadows or pack a picnic of wine and your favorite bites and listen to the OC Pacific Symphony under the stars!

So, we might need to stop here as we clearly could go on for days about the shopping, spas, restaurants, beaches, hotels, and lil' hideaways that we adore and simply refer to as home! Alas, we will leave it up to you, but be sure to tell us your favorite Romantic Getaways in Orange County!

Who likes it when their nails chip off minutes after leaving the salon? No one, unless you really love spending hours at the salon and get a sort of high off the fumes! My friend and I were out getting lunch recently when I noticed her (unchipped) sparkly pink manicure (you know how much I love all things shiny!). She told me she’d just gotten CalGel nails and that they last more than 3 weeks…even better they look fantastic and they don’t destroy your nails! I was floored. See, I have a love/hate relationship with acrylics.

• Pros:

o They look great
o They protect my real nails, which break easily
o They help me type on a touch screen. But, I mean, really, now

• Cons:
o They absolutely destroy my real nails
o I never find the time to get back in for a fill
o I'm notorious for breaking my acrylics at the gym or lifting some, something at an event

CalGels, which are natural soak-off gels, sound like a pretty sweet deal to me! YES, please! With the Easter Bunny hopping right around the corner and my Lenten sacrifice putting a real cramp in my sweet tooth (yes, of course I gave up chocolate and fast food again this year!), one of our brides said she wanted to give all of her guests chocolate bars as party favors and could we help her find some options...I think I nearly passed out, mouth watering at the computer screen and all. I will admit, not my most classy of moments.

An Appetite for Appetizers!

Food! Growing up in an Italian family, our relationship food with is downright spiritual. Every major milestone, holiday, celebration in life is connected with a very particular food – and, well, a lot of it!

So when our clients are choosing the menu for their events I completely understand that with each selection it is not only personal taste but the feeling, mood or even memory attached to that delicacy that they are trying to share with their guests!

You may think that appetizers aren’t that important, and select any given three options and move along in your planning process. Oh, but wait! This is the first real “taste” of your wedding your guests receive. Not to mention by this time they are usually quite hungry and are thrilled to devour the tasty treats on platters being served during cocktail hour! Make sure you choices reflect you as a couple, compliment the meal they are about to enjoy and the drinks currently being served, and are appropriate for the time of year!

The light, crisp taste of many Spring appetizers is fitting for a season known for showers then sunshine and of course, flowers! My personal favorites include anything with shrimp, sundried tomatoes, prosciutto and melon, and asparagus!

Now, with all this talk of food, I am not only hungry but wanting to cook! Here is what I will be making tonight in the spirit of a perfect spring bite:

Jumbo Shrimp Wrapped with Arugula and Prosciutto (http://www.foodnetwork.com/)

Serves:18 jumbo shrimp, feeding 6 to 8 guests.

Ingredients

•18 cooked, frozen jumbo shrimp, defrosted

•1 lemon, zested and juiced

•1 clove garlic, finely chopped

•Coarse salt and black pepper

•2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, eyeball it

•2 cups trimmed arugula leaves

•9 slices imported prosciutto, 1/3 pound

•18 grape tomatoes

•18 party picks, 3 or 4 inches long

Directions

Place shrimp in shallow dish and add lemon zest and juice, garlic, salt, pepper and extra-virgin olive oil. Toss shrimp to coat evenly with dressing. Arrange the arugula in piles of 2 or 3 leaves, working with 6 piles at a time. Pile up 3 slices of prosciutto and cut in half across.

To assemble the shrimp, place 1 shrimp on each pile of 2 or 3 arugula leaves then wrap the leaves up with the shrimp using the prosciutto. Assemble 6 pieces at a time, like an assembly line. Nest a grape tomato into the curve of the prosciutto wrapped shrimp and secure into place with a party pick.

Arrange the shrimp appetizers on a platter and don't forget to put out a small empty bowl near the shrimp platter to collect the tails of shrimp and party picks, once guests finish the appetizers.

ENGAGED: Meet Saundra and Ryan

Upon meeting Saundra, and before we even began discussing the details of her wedding, she mentioned her love for Style Me Pretty; I knew we were going to make a great team!

Thanks to Brittany from Brittany Rene Photo I was able to meet Saundra and Ryan. They are getting married in June at one of our favorite church venues, St. Edward in Dana Point. From there, they will celebrate with their family and friends, and a festive mariachi band, at the new and beautiful venue, Aliso Viejo Country Club.

They recently took the most beautiful engagement pictures that Brittany shared with us.

POP! Utterly Engaged New Year's Party Table Inspiration

It's been a couple months since we rang in 2011, but that doesn't mean we can't showcase this amazing table we created for Utterly Engaged and their New Year's party held at Avia Hotel in Long Beach. This year's party incorporated a table design contest where each group had to take the theme "Snap. Crackle. Pop" and run with it to create a unique design that would wow both the judges and the attendees.

We partnered with a strong group of vendors and created a table inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's pop art.

Within the table design, we wanted to tell the couples story. The images hanging from the table (and all the other stationery included on the table) were designed by Jordan of Mintwich Design and the structure was created by Amy's dad with Bride and Bloom Florals in Long Beach. They showed the couple's engagement in a unique way: through pop art!

The cake was designed beautifully by Erica with Erica O'Brien Cake Design. I loved how she created a cake that was whimsical and "pop"-ish at the same time (is that even a real term?).

We had a fun time coming up with the design for the table. We wanted it to be unique and something we don't typically do; our goal was to truly think outside the box.

Check out these amazing, custom made napkin ring holders from Jen Hearts Art! We loved what they added to the table.

Of course we couldn't have done such a fun design without the unique chairs provided to everyone at the party from Classic Party Rentals and the beautiful linens by La Tivola Linens in Newport Beach.

And huge props to Amy with Bride and Bloom Florals for the simple, but creative take on the centerpieces; her design fit the table perfectly.

Congrats to all the other tables and vendors in the room. We were completely "wow-ed" by everyone's unique concepts and designs...we truly work in an uber-talented industry!!!

PURPLE: Our Bride's Color of The Year!

Although Pantone says that Honeysuckle is the color of the year for 2011, I would have to disagree according to the couples we have been working with. Purple is in and honeysuckle is out!

Sixty-five percent of our couples this year are incorporating the color purple into their big day. Whether they are using it as an accent color, just as their shoes or as their main element, we are seeing it everywhere. But I have to admit, I love it. Purple is such a beautiful color and with the royal wedding soon approaching it seems relevant since purple is the color of royalty and power. In the past, purple die was more expensive so if you were able to have purple clothes or silks, it meant you were well off.

The other benefit of using the color purple is it goes with so many other colors. Although we have many brides using the color purple, they are all using it with different colors ensuring that each wedding is truly going to be unique and personalized to the couple.

For example, this not so traditional bride with her black gown looks stunning. Her bouquet of purple flowers with red, green and black accents is equally as stunning and creates a look I have never seen before!

Paired with red, this bouquet is bright and could easily fit into a spring or summer wedding. It's regal and sophisticated without being too feminine.

Talk about the perfect look for a spring wedding! I love the different tones of purple incorporated into this inspiration board. Paired with charcoal grey, it keeps a masculine element in the wedding but still gives the bride the feminine and girly look she wanted.

Another perfect for spring or summer pairing is purple with green and teal. I love how this look is fresh and sophisticated.

Memorable Monday: Sweet Anniversary Inspired by Lady & The Tramp

When Ashleigh from Ashleigh Taylor Photography approached us with the idea of an Anniversary shoot inspired by Lady and The Tramp, we just couldn't resist! With an amazing team of vendors complied, we started discussing our vision for the shoot and it became clear that this was going to be a unique design, created personally for this beautiful couple.

The shoot was designed as a surprise for Brooklyn. She looked extra glamorous that day thanks to Erica from 10.11 Makeup. She always bring out the most beautiful elements of every Lady!

Mark surprised her with a beautiful bouquet of florals designed by Megan of Honey and Poppies. They were so gorgeous I couldn't stop admiring them (and secretly wishing they were for me)!!

We loved the idea of Mark personally writing "his lady" a note to reaffirm his love. Amber from Pitbulls and Posies designed all the paper goods and knocked it out of the park! She took the vision for the shoot and ran with it, taking it to a completely different level.

Mark then took his lady to a surprise sweetheart table specifically designed around the movie, Lady and The Tramp. From the Italian styled flowers and tableware, to the plate of spaghetti and beautiful cake, not a single detail was overlooked for this romantic evening.

For those of you who don't know the movie as well we do (dont judge!), "Bella Notte" is the name of the song that is played when Lady and The Tramp have their famous spaghetti scene. We incorporated this name into the name on the wine labels, as well as the cute banner that hung above their sweetheart table, thanks to Amber.

Of course Brooklyn and Mark had to have a spaghetti scene of their own!

The cake was designed perfectly by Erica from Erica O'Brien Cake Design. She is one of our absolute favorite people to work with and always exceeds our expectations! This cake was ...no exception.

Thanks to Jeni and her team at FOUND Rentals, Mark was even able to serenade Brooklyn just like in the movie. What a guy! ;-)

My little dog Cali even made her first on-camera debut in one of our shoots! Lets just say it was her first and possibly last appearances but I am still so proud! :-)

Thank you to the amazing group of vendors who joined us on this shoot. This was truly a team effort and for that, we can't say thanks enough!

Spring (Break) Is Here!

I'll admit it...I have been trying to live vicariously through our college interns and am super jealous of all the pictures posted all over Facebook and Twitter of Spring Break - you remember - the days of tropical getaways with your very best friends where you lounge at the pool/beach all day and dance all night with no work or school in sight! Oh, the good-ole-days!

So, after all the planning is done and the wedding has passed and you feel like you need a break of your own, why not Mexico?! Reminisce with me as this post is dedicated to the Honeymoon - Mexico style!

We love everything about it from its close proximity, just a quick flight from SoCal, to the bright colors and warm beaches! Wedding Wednesday: Orglamic Wedding Planning 101

If you’ve been reading my Wedding Wednesday posts for the last couple of weeks, you are already well on your way to having some eco-inspired elements to your big day. But as everyone knows, it doesn’t matter how gorgeous your invites or dress are if your wedding ceremony and reception miss the mark when it comes to décor.

Décor not only makes a huge statement on you and your hubby’s styles, but it also helps set the tone for the entire event. Luckily there are a million and one ways to express yourself once you take these Orglamic tips into account:

--Use centerpieces that can double as party favors. Potted succulents or lavender plants make luxurious and in-style options.

--If you insist on using fresh cut flowers then use flowers that are in season and can be bought locally. Nothing is less green than having fresh flowers flown across the globe because you absolutely have to have that type…hellooo Bridezilla!

--Use candles with organic soy-based wax as opposed to petroleum-based wax.

--Suggest to guests (or just your closest friends) that they take home candles and centerpieces at the end of the event, so that they avoid ending up in the trash.

--Don’t use disposable items for food and drinks. Use proper plates, glasses, napkins and even cocktail napkins, will not only eliminate landfill waste, but they are super classy as well.

--Make your party favors consumable to avoid them being tossed by the guest as soon as they get home. And think about it, who really wants a picture frame or other tchotchke lying around the house to remember YOUR special day?! I love the idea of Nicobella organic truffles as favors.

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 12

It's pouring rain, my feet are soaked. The weather is cold and runners continue to pass by me. Mile 21 is finally here. I glance around at the other runners. Some in trash bags, many rubbing their hands for warmth. Some are now walking and another bare footed runner just ran by with a smile on his face ready to complete the "from Stadium to Sea" LA Marathon in five more miles.

I tell the runners to keep going and that they're almost there. Many smile and say thanks but others just miserably run or walk by. Unlike them. I'm standing on the sidewalk with an umbrella over my head, warmed up in three layers complete with a thick scarf and Ugg boots. Did you think I was actually running in the marathon? Not a chance.

However, I was there to support someone who was. In early June, one of my great friends will be ready at the starting line to run the most important race of her life. She will conquer obstacles far more difficult than rain and acquire wounds far worse than blisters on her feet. She is embarking on a new course as she takes on the new role of Wife.

I'm not saying that marriage is entirely difficult and should be seen as a chore (after all, I'm not married) but from what I have observed, it's not going to be easy either. From start to finish, my friend endured not only one of the worst rain storms I've seen as an LA resident, but the drive to persevere through the hardships. Ambulances carrying away other runners, paces starting to slow, and rain continuously pouring down on them. She knew that she could do it and I'm sure that having friends and family cheering her on from the sidelines provided the support she needed to keep going.

Brides, remember that. Keep your friends and family close because when things get tough, it's your cheerleaders who will get you through it all. The encourage(r)s, the listeners, and even the ones you call just to vent to. Acclimate to your new role as Wife but don't forget the ones who supported you on your path to get there.

The best part of it all. When my friend finished the race, her fiance was waiting at the Finish line. And, when you have found the right guy for you, he will always be waiting at that Finish line with a proud smile on his face.

Tales of a Newlywed: Happy Anniversary!

One year down, a lifetime to go...

My one year anniversary is this week and as I call the bakery I used a year ago to see if they will ship the top tier of my wedding cake to the South, I reflect on this really crazy first year of marriage.

In addition to the usual reflections of, “I can’t believe it was a year ago, today” or “Man, that really was the greatest day of my life,” I will let you in on some things I learned as a newly-wed, in bullet-form of course as all lazy bloggers do.

• Biggest pet peeve while I was engaged: When people asked, “Are you so excited to get married?” to which I wish I could have responded, “Really? Why would you ask that? Do I seem like I’m getting dragged into this against my will? Are you excited for a free, crazy expensive dinner and open bar?”

• Biggest pet peeve after the wedding: When people asked, “How are you liking married life?” to which I wish I could have responded, “Meh – not what I expected. Totally didn’t know he was like that. I’m sorta reconsidering” just to see their reaction.

• Second biggest pet peeve after the wedding: When people asked, “So are you going to have kids right away or do you think you’ll wait?” to which I wish I could have responded, “Not really any of your business but while you bring the subject up, would you mind if we started practicing, right here, right now?” (wink, wink)

• Most awesome part about being married: Knowing without a shadow of a doubt that you have each other’s back. Knowing that we will do anything to make each other happy because if we’re happy individually, we’re happy together.

• Second most awesome part about being married: Nesting. I love making our apartment our home. Making our place a complete reflection of who we are and feeling completely comfortable in our nest.

• The worst part about being married: Changing your name legally – don’t get me wrong, I started going by my married name almost right away but its seriously not a fun process to change your name legally and I still haven’t even completed that process.

• The real worst part about being married: The snoring.

• The single item that has so far saved our marriage: TiVo. How else would I get to watch my trashy TV? And Lord knows there’s only so much History channel I can take!

• On a related note- TV show best watched with my husband: The Marriage Ref – only because its funny when they address a fight that we often have. This is closely followed by Jersey Shore – and that’s only because who doesn’t love the Joisy Shoa?

• The thing that’s changed the most since marriage: fighting. We fight fairer now and our fights now don’t end with some dramatic “Ronnie vs. Sammi” ultimatum – OK they never did but you know what I mean.

So, that’s my 1st year review for those of you entering newly-wedded bliss. That’s what you have to look forward to. I can’t wait to see this list again in 5, 10, 15 years and see how it changes as we get older in our relationship. I hope my insights were helpful to you or at the very least, entertaining.

There are several gorgeous wedding dress designers that use earth-conscious materials to create their gowns. Adele Weshler offers individually hand-cut dresses made out of organic hemp and silk blends that are dyed with vegetable dyes in one of my favorite eco-friendly collections.

Another top eco-designer, Deborah Lindquist, offers a bridal collection that includes everything from couture-inspired designs to bustier tops and column skirts made of hemp, silk and beyond.

Nicole Lenzen also does one-of-a-kind custom bridal wear out of eco-friendly fabrics, so you can let your imagination run wild (or ‘borrow’ a look from a non-eco designer) for your walk down the aisle.

Another way to go green during your white wedding is to wear a previously purchased wedding dress. There are so many dresses out there that have been worn once and are in excellent condition, or even better yet have never been worn at all (you can thank the indecisive brides who bought several dresses later!) This is a great way to not only lessen your carbon footprint, but you may also find that designer dress that was out of your budget for a fraction of the price. Both sites offer a wide variety of dresses in every price range and their search options are easy to maneuver, making this a really fun way to shop from your couch.

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 11

Ocean view, mimosas, brunch…why couldn’t all meetings be conducted this way? I met up with the MOH (maid of honor) and a fellow bridesmaid to discuss one of the most important aspects of wedding planning. The bachlorette party!

The following list comprises what many of America’s bachlorette parties consist of:

Exciting locale
Alcohol
Dancing
Bridal veils, bridesmaid boas
Sparkly tank tops that read “Bride” and “Bridesmaid”
Pink, feathery and glittery decor
Male strippers
Penis toys, games, etc. (hate to sound like a prude, but why would you want to walk around with a crown of tiny penises on your head in public? Just my opinion, but don’t think I don’t giggle when I see it.)

Our list will look something like this:

Bridal veils, classy but matchy-matchy bridesmaid dress code for one night (hey gotta stand-out and find each other in a crowd!)

In order to not divulge too much information before our June date arrives. I am proud to say that we accomplished so much today at our meeting. We will be heading to Sin City to celebrate like many other bachelor and bachlorettes do every weekend, every year.

Whether we plan every last detail of our entire trip complete with limo service from California to Vegas with VIP entry to the clubs, or choose to fly (or drive) out and choose our fun as we go - it will definitely be a weekend to remember. I like to think that this could be reminiscent of the movie, the Hangover. But I can rest assured that our bride will not go missing, no girl will lose a tooth, and we will not wake up to a tiger in our bathroom. (Sorry, Charlie.)

Instead we will be lounging by the pool during the daytime, dancing until all hours of the night, and satisfying our palate with ice cream brunches and late night carbohydrate binges.

So regardless of whether your bachlorette party will be a Vegas blowout, a spa retreat, or a night out to the local bars with friends. Enjoy this event because it’s her “last single girl” moment.

Memorable Monday: Romantic Getaway #2 Santa Barbara

As we work our way down the coast stopping off at our favorite romantic getaways, we must encourage you to plan a stay in Santa Barbara. This coastal town has a bit of everything from beaches to dining, shopping to wineries and just 2 hours outside of LA is the perfect short-distance, anytime escape!

Tales of a Nelywed: The Newlywed Nine

It exists! You’ve heard of the freshman 15 but you’ve probably heard less about the phenomenon of the Newlywed 9.

I won’t sit here and pretend to be a weight loss expert and try to tell you ways to avoid the nasty nine – that’s not my job. I will however give you my story in the hopes that you won’t go down the same road.

It’s common knowledge that people in love gain a couple pounds at the beginning of their relationship. Something about being totally comfortable with the one you’re with and all. Well, I’ve been with my husband for nearly eight years so that stage has long past. This sudden increase in my waist line is attributable to a few other things.

First, I lost a good amount of weight for my wedding. Dieting and working out every day for the two months prior to my big day made the pounds come off quickly. But after the wedding, after the honeymoon, after the big move… my strict workout and diet regimen just never found its way back into my schedule. Even though I’ve been trying to work out regularly my diet is nowhere near where it was pre-wedding.

Which leads me to my second point: Since getting married and becoming a stay-at-home wife, I’ve taken my role as June Cleaver very seriously (ok, not serious. I’ve been complaining and making fun of this for some time but you get what I mean). That means I’ve taken on all the cooking and grocery shopping for the two of us. But somewhere along the way, I lost track of June and found Paula instead. In my excitement to have dinner ready for my husband every night and my resolution to become the best home cook in the south, I began watching a bit too much of Ms. Paula Deen and, well, I agree, everything does taste better with a little more butter. This is also tied into the fact that because I’m at home a lot more now, I find a great cure for boredom is baking and making homemade ice cream (mmmm….)

The good thing about the newlywed nine, at least in my case and this is absolutely a result of my home cooking, is that I’m not alone in my weight gain. The hubs has put on a few pounds as well which both comforts me (because as long as he’s gaining weight, he won’t notice my larger rear end) and makes me feel a little bad about my new cooking habits. But with almost a year of wedded bliss under our (tighter) belts, we soon won’t be able to use the “Newlywed Nine” as our excuse so it’s time we make a concerted effort to lose it together – or just come up with a fun new alliterative phrases to blame. Second-year Sixteen??

Tales of a Bridesmaid: Edition 10

Many of my friends and I are in very different stages of our lives. We're all involved in some kind of marriage, but not necessarily the type that involves a significant other. Many of my friends are married to their jobs and career goals. Some are actually married to husbands and have wonderful children that do not repel me from the idea of ever having my own. Some are married to the world, feeling the constant itch to travel and live in foreign countries.

And some are waiting...Hey it worked for "Waity Katie!" I am an unofficial bridesmaid for many weddings that have yet to happen. Why? We're all simply waiting for HIM to put the ring on her finger and pop the question. Until that happens, my friends and I will try to answer the question that every girl wants an answer to. "When will I get married?"

Luckily for me, my friends are in various stages of their lives so the infamous question will have many answers.

For the travel bug, she will probably get married once she settles down in one location long enough to meet a man and date him. However, we all think she will end up married after a month of meeting someone because she will instantly know he is the one.

For Tiffany and Co. who has already been trying on wedding rings. She will have to wait patiently while her boyfriend acclimates to his new job. After all, men like to be somewhat financially stable before purchasing the ring right?

For the nice girl, she will get her answer when her live-in boyfriend is able to face the realities of marriage. Why get married when you already live together and share finances? Because it's her chance to plan a wedding, put on a dress, and celebrate the moment she changes or hyphenates her last name. Note to guys: marriage isn't just simply signing paperwork at a courthouse. To girls, it is so much more!

For the career diva, she will get married when her career is stable, her higher degrees have been achieved, and she has met the man who can accept her for her desire to break more glass ceilings.

For the girl who is waiting, she has her guy. She has her wedding all planned out. She is simply waiting for the question to come. And my dear friend, it will be when you least expect it. So stop trying to ruin the surprise for yourself.

For all of the brides to be, they are keeping busy until the date on the invitations actually arrives.

So when will I get married? Who knows? I don't. You don't. He probably doesn't. My pink, glittery Magic 8 Ball won't tell me. I guess I will just wait and see.

The shopping! I have the fondest childhood memories of San Francisco, as it is the first major city in California I ever visited with my mom and going in all the amazing stores!

If you’re like me, and beautiful views take your breath away, visit the Marin Headlands, the viewpoint at Twin Peaks, and the Japanese Garden in de Young Golden Gate Park by day. Crissy Field’s path by the Golden Gate Bridge is perfect for a romantic stroll…if you start at dusk before the sun sets, you can see the beautiful city lights go up as you round back. When night falls, the glamorous, 30’s style Starlight Room is a glamorous place for drinks and dancing.

Tales of a Newlywed: Date Night!

So I thought this week I’d share a story with you about a newlywed couple from the big city who moved to a small town.

Not having any clue where even the nearest grocery store was and not knowing a soul in the city, the couple decided they needed a night out on the “town.” No use trying to find groceries for dinner, and without cable set up yet, no use staying in for the night. It was, after all, a Saturday night and in the big city, the two would have probably been out with their couple friends at any given bar, lounge or night club.

Using Yelp as their only guide, the couple set out to find their first local bar. The couple had difficulty finding the place at first and finally realized that they had indeed passed right by it several times. The problem was that it was so poorly lit with no windows and only a single very eerie light shining in the back of the place. Although Yelp users had nothing but amazing things to say about this establishment, the couple was a little apprehensive about staying for a drink in a place that looked like it invited an unsavory sort.

The two decided to move on to the second bar on their Yelp recommendations list. This place turned out to be a house that was converted into a bar/restaurant so it naturally looked a bit more welcoming. The couple went in and found an eclectic group of people who generally weren’t all too welcoming. After one drink at the bar the couple decided they still felt uneasy about the company they were in and decided to try the third and final bar on their Yelp list only to find that the third bar literally only had two patrons and what looked to be a high school garage band covering Johnny Cash.

Feeling defeated by the night and just wanting to find a place where the couple can enjoy a decent drink together and perhaps a few appetizers the couple was determined to make their date night happen. And like a beacon shining in the distance, the two found the local Chili’s restaurant where they concluded their night with two-for-one margarita specials.

Ok, I’ll admit, that was me and my husband. Nothing against Chili’s, but that wasn’t quite the night we had in mind when we said let’s go grab a drink and check out the local night scene. But I’ll admit it was probably one of the best nights we’ve had in our new town. It was a fun little adventure that we couldn’t stop laughing at. No, it wasn’t quite like Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s Date Night but it sure was eventful and meaningful in our relationship. And I’ll tell you, the nachos at Chili’s paired with those margaritas… seriously couldn’t ask for more in a date night.

So the moral of the story: don’t forget to have a date night. With his rigorous med school schedule, we try to have date night at least once a week these days and I think that’s important. We don’t always go out but we’ll make time for just the two of us to share a laugh and a drink. So no matter how busy you get or how caught up in the day-to-day of your life, go on adventures together, try new things together, try new places together, even if all you do is end up at a chain restaurant, make the most of it.

Tales of a Newlywed: Campaign for Independence!

As mentioned previously, I’ve been playing housewife for the last several months and I’ll tell you, I’ve got the desperate thing down, still working on the housewife part.

Here’s the thing: we moved away from home, away from my work, away from my family, away from my friends – changing my role in our relationship sooner than I had expected. I say that because I suppose I always wanted to be a stay at home mom but, just not now.

So now being in a new place, where the only people we know are from my husband’s school, I very quickly began to realize, I NEED a life of my own. To keep me sane in our marriage, to lengthen an otherwise short fuse when it comes to computer/gadgets/wires/clutter, I NEED something of my own to focus on. Definitely a new concept to some wives I’ve met in my new locale and definitely the root of my desperation.

I love my husband and I fully support him in everything he does. I’ve learned to tolerate -errr- enjoy the documentaries he loves to watch and I love (most of) his friends. I generally love everything about him – that does not at all mean that I want or need to take part of every aspect of his life. I enjoy having my own hobbies, my own interests, my own occasional happy hour with the girls – so I’ve vowed to make this happen and not become my husband. Not become the girl who needs her husband by her side at social events. Also, I vow to not become overly concerned about making sure the carpet is vacuumed before he comes home and anxious about making dinner in a timely manner – neither were hobbies or interests before marriage but simply chores.

So my married and soon-to-be married friends – join me in my individuality. Join me in my pursuit to be more than just a housewife. Couple friends are fun but girlfriends are too, even if it means your man will need to figure out dinner on his own. In fact, leave the dishes in the sink and join me now for a drink – without the boys.
